TIPS FOR CARD PLAY 36 : MISSING THE KING

Tips For Card Play 36 : Missing the King

  • North
  • A Q J 3
  • South
  • 10 7 6 2

What is your best chance to avoid a loser?

You have plenty of entries.

Answer:

Lead low from your hand and play the jack or queen from dummy.
This is the situation for which you are playing:

  • North
  • A Q J 3
  • West
  • K 8 4
  • East
  • 9 5
  • South
  • 10 7 6 2

Lead low to the queen. If that wins, return to hand and lead the 10 next. If West follows low, let the 10 run (or lead low instead of the 10 and finesse the jack).
Unless your hand is short of entries do not lead the 10 first. That would cost you a trick in this situation:

  • North
  • A Q J 3
  • West
  • East
  • 9 8 5 4
  • South
  • 10 7 6 2

Start with a low card from South and you make 4 tricks. Lead the 10 first and you make only 3.
